The next volume of the oldest academic yearbook presents works covering a wide chronological and thematic spectrum of the history of the Byzantine Empire. The volume opens with an article by R.M. Shukurov, dedicated to the fate of the captured "barbarians" in Byzantium: according to the author, the practice of capturing prisoners and their subsequent inclusion in Byzantine society found its theoretical justification in religious and cultural ideologemes postulating the mission of the Christian empire in spreading the true faith. The theme of cultural interaction of the Romans with neighboring and even distant peoples is reflected in other articles, including the work of D.P. Shulga about replicas of Byzantine coins in China. In the traditional art history section, the posthumous publication of an article by O.S. Popova about the mosaics of the Church of St. Sophia in Thessalonica. A number of works are devoted to little-known episodes in the history of Russian Byzantine studies in the 19th-20th centuries.
