In the current volume of the oldest academic yearbook presents the work on various issues of history and culture of the Byzantine Empire and neighboring countries. The authors examines such themes as theological discussions in V-VII. in the context of political controversies between Rome, Constantinople, and the Sassanid monarchy, peculiar properties of the military organization of early Byzantium, reflection military rituals of ancient Rus and Turks in the Byzantine sources, reception of ancient and Byzantine heritage in the regions controlled by the Latins of the Greek world due to the ideals of the Renaissance. The article of fcademician S.P. Karpov introduced into scientific circulation new large set of sources on the history of Italian factories Tana (Azov). A feature of the volume is a large proportion of the works devoted to the history of Russian Byzantine studirs and, in particular, the life and work of such outstanding Russian art historians as D.V. Aynalov and N.P. Kondakov.
